Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) works on various surfaces, primarily fabrics like cotton, polyester, blends, and denim, but also surprisingly well on hard surfaces like wood, glass, ceramics, leather, acrylic, and metal, provided you use the right type of vinyl (e.g., low-temp for synthetics) and adjust heat, pressure, and time for each material, often requiring extra pressure and care for non-fabric items.
Fabric Surfaces
- Cotton & Blends: Excellent for standard HTV, easy for beginners.
- Polyester: Great for sportswear, requires low-temp HTV to prevent dye migration.
- Nylon: Needs low-temp vinyl and careful application to avoid melting.
- Canvas & Denim: Works well, especially for bags and jackets; needs more pressure.
- Spandex/Swimwear: Compatible with specific types of HTV.Â
Hard & Specialty Surfaces
- Wood: Raw, painted, or stained wood (smooth surface is key).
- Glass & Ceramics: Works with enough heat/pressure.
- Leather: Real or faux leather works well.
- Acrylic & Metal: Clean, smooth surfaces are best.
- Cork & Cardstock: Porous materials that bond well.
- Sports Balls: Customize footballs, basketballs, etc.
Surfaces to Use With Caution or Avoid
- Delicate Fabrics: Silk, satin, or very coarse materials can be difficult.
- Sublimated Polyester: Standard HTV won’t stick; requires specific types.
- Carpet: Generally not suitable.Â
